From: The National Science Foundation Press Release 13-026
"The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted market approval to an artificial retina technology today [February 14, 2013], the first bionic eye to be approved for patients in the United States. The prosthetic technology was developed in part with support from the National Science Foundation (NSF). ... The FDA approval currently applies to individuals who have lost sight as a result of severe to profound retinitis pigmentosa (RP), an ailment that affects one in every 4,000 Americans."
Hopefully, after additional testing, these new artificial retinas can be applied to other individuals who have lost vision due to other conditions and injuries.
