LaHood delays rule that may require backup cameras

COMMENT: Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood again delayed a rule requiring backup cameras in all cars and trucks for 2014 models. Even the DOT acknowledges that these cameras could save about 300 people if not more. While backup camera will increase the costs of vehicles, if they can save lives isn't the extra cost worth it?

Facebook

Google, Microsoft, AOL and other big companies have agreed to install a "do not track" button in Web browsers to make sure that you can surf the Web with an assured amount of privacy. It's a big step for the industry -- but until this button arrives, how can you assure yourself a little more privacy online?

COMMENT: Good article and advice. Another suggestion is to use one browser for general browsing and another for sensitive sites only.

A new link between traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder

Another study showing that sustaining a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) makes a person more susceptible to developing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This study shows that the physical blow from a TBI causes physical changes in key part of the brain, which then makes the victim more likely to develop PTSD and anxiety disorders. These types of studies will hopefully help physicians treat, diagnose and prevent PTSD.

Why and How iOS Apps Are Grabbing Your Data

Early last week the personal diary app Path became the fulcrum of a massive discussion about how cavalier mobile apps are getting with harvesting your, presumably, personal information. Path was found by a developer to send the entire contents of its users Address Books, where, it was uncovered, it was being stored locally. . . .

COMMENT: Good article. Pretty scary although it could be worse if other information was being sent other than your Address Book.

FCC to get tougher on robocalls ? USATODAY.com

The Federal Communications Commission today is set to approve tougher rules giving consumers additional protection against unwanted autodialed or prerecorded calls to home phone lines. "We have gotten thousands of complaints," says FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski. "Consumers were still getting robocalls they don't want and shouldn't get." . . .

COMMENT: It will be interesting to learn how the FCC intends to enforce these new rules. What will happen to violators? Will people be able to enforce these new rules themselves like they can for violations under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA)?

'This Message Will Self-Destruct': One Shar.es Erases Data After Transmission

Ever wonder if the private emails you send to trusted friends and acquaintances are deleted or if that information lingers in their inboxes? OneShar.es has a smart solution to safeguard sensitive information that’s very Mission Impossible.
The web tool allows people to easily share private information, whether its via your mobile device (apps for iOS and Android) or your browser window. The recipient has one chance to view the information and when he or she closes out, it self destructs. . . .

COMMENT: Tools such as these should help with privacy concerns as it limits what someone can do if they receive a confidential email in error.

Cannot comment yet on how effective OneShar.es is yet but am going to try it.

Oregon Woman Says Debt Collector Called 911 on Her With Phony Suicide Threat - ABC News

COMMENT: If this is true, Wells Fargo and the employee should be penalized harshly for this type of completely abusive and outrageous conduct. As Wells Fargo is presumably the originator of the debt, the FDCPA would not apply as it only applies to debt collectors. The woman would seemingly be stuck with only state law remedies. Punitive damages would seem appropriate in this type of case.

Many doctors hide the truth about medical errors, study finds - latimes.com

Some things are better left unsaid – and that includes certain aspects of your medical condition, doctors say.

In a nationwide survey of roughly 1,800 physicians, 17% had some level of disagreement with the notion that they should “never tell a patient something that is not true.” Not only that, but 11% of those surveyed acknowledged that they had told a patient “something that was not true” in the past year.

Move Over Robo-calls, States Sell Email Addresses For Campaigns To Reach Voters | Fox News

My Comment: Do you agree that political emails are not "spam"? Isn't actual communication different than just trying to get re-elected? Not surprisingly, politicians, on both sides of the aisle, always seem to "exempt" themselves from the limitations they impose on other industries when it comes to these types of issues. At least this is one area where the parties always seem to agree.
